Dakar 2026 – Day 2: Sand, Sweat, and Full Commitment
Dakar 2026 – Day 2: Sand, Sweat, and Solid Timesheets
Day 2 of the Dakar Rally 2026 served up everything we love about this beast of an event – brutal terrain, navigational puzzles, and results sheets that make you think “wow, those guys were actually racing out there!”. It wasn’t just sand in the eyes – there were some proper leaderboard movers too.
Moto Action – Sanders Strikes Back
The bike brigade put on a show with defending champion Daniel Sanders (AUS) on the KTM slicing through the dunes to take the Stage 2 win in 04:13:37, edging out young Spaniard Edgar Canet (KTM) by 1m 35s. American Ricky Brabec (Honda) crossed third, 1m 46s off the pace but still solidly in the hunt.
| Position | Rider | Machine | Time | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Daniel Sanders (AUS) | KTM | 04:13:37 | — |
| 2 | Edgar Canet (ESP) | KTM | 04:15:12 | 01:35 |
| 3 | Ricky Brabec (USA) | Honda | 04:15:23 | 01:46 |
| 4 | Skyler Howes (USA) | Honda | 03:15 | — |
| 5 | Tosha Schareina (ESP) | Honda | 03:34 | — |
After this stage, Sanders now takes the overall lead with a total time of 07:42:24, just 30 seconds ahead of Canet and 2m 18s up on Brabec. A tight fight so early in the rally shows it’s going to be relentless.
Car Class – Toyota Shows Speed, Al-Attiyah Takes Lead
While we’re mainly a two-wheel outfit here at Lid Life, you can’t ignore what went down in the car ranks. Toyota drivers dominated the day’s stage finish – with Seth Quintero taking the stage win and a gaggle of Hilux T1 machines filling the top slots – but Nasser Al-Attiyah (Dacia Sandriders) keeps the overall lead thanks to consistency, sitting 7 seconds ahead of Quintero in the general classification after Stage 2.
What It All Means
Day 2 wasn’t just about grit and grunt – it was calculated aggression. Sanders showed why being a champion isn’t only about throttle control – it’s about leaving the race in one piece while still being faster than everyone else. Canet’s consistency keeps him in the mix, and Brabec isn’t going anywhere. Navigation and mechanical sympathy are proving just as crucial as speed – classic Dakar vibes.
