Glenn Irwin Returns to the North West 200 – Road Racing’s Reluctant Retirement
Glenn Irwin Is Back for the North West 200 – Because Some Roads Just Won’t Let You Retire
Just when we thought one of road racing’s biggest modern names had hung up his leathers for good, Glenn Irwin has gone and done the most biker thing imaginable: changed his mind.
Yep – Irwin will return to the North West 200 this May, reversing his decision to retire from road racing and giving fans exactly what they didn’t dare hope for. Somewhere along the north coast, the Armco barriers are already bracing themselves.
With 11 North West 200 wins already under his belt, Irwin isn’t just popping back for a nostalgia lap and a wave to the crowd. He’s coming back to win. Again. If it ain’t broken… give it another go at 200mph.
Why He Stepped Away in the First Place
Back in October 2024, Irwin announced he was stepping away from road racing altogether. The reason wasn’t form, motivation, or a lack of results – it was family. As he said at the time, that was the “absolute reason”.
The decision followed a brutally tough year in the British Superbike Championship. What started as a strong season unravelled after a serious hip injury in June, leaving Irwin with fractured pelvis bones, surgery, and time spent in hospital wondering how quickly everything can change.
Anyone who’s ever been laid up, staring at a ceiling tile instead of a race track, will understand how heavy those moments can get. From fighting for championships to struggling to move – that’ll reset anyone’s thinking.
The Call That Changed Everything
Enter Nitrous Competitions Racing, now running Ducati machinery in BSB. They came calling with something very specific: a bike, a package, and a plan to win the British Superbike Championship.
And part of that plan? Going back to the North West 200 – and winning it again.
Irwin will line up in May aboard the Ducati-powered Nitrous Competitions machine, the same team he’s racing with in British Superbikes. Familiar faces, serious kit, and unfinished business.
Let’s be honest – if someone rang you up and said, “Fancy winning the NW200 again to help win BSB?” You’d probably need about three seconds to answer.
A North West 200 Record That Speaks for Itself
Irwin made his North West 200 debut back in 2015 and has been rewriting the record books ever since. He’s now the most successful Superbike rider in the event’s history, with 11 consecutive Superbike wins to his name.
That includes a hat-trick of victories at the 2024 event, before sitting out last year’s races entirely. In his absence, Superbike honours went to Davey Todd and Michael Dunlop – no easy fill-ins, that.
But records like Irwin’s don’t fade quietly. They sit there, tapping you on the shoulder, saying, “You sure you’re done?”
More Than Just Road Racing
While the North West 200 is where Irwin has truly made his name, it’s not his only taste of the roads. He made his sole Isle of Man TT appearance in 2022, where he finished as the fastest newcomer – no small feat on a place that takes years to truly understand.
Earlier in his career, he also competed at the Ulster Grand Prix, building the road racing experience that underpins his smooth, clinical style at the North West.
Family, Goals, and One Slightly Adjusted Dream
Irwin has been open about how last year’s low points reshaped his thinking – but not his ambition. The ultimate goal remains the British Superbike Championship, a dream he shares with his fiancée Laura.
And if winning the North West 200 again helps get him there? Well… that sounds like a pretty good deal.
His personal target has shifted slightly too. Instead of just chasing trophies, there’s now talk of pushing that North West tally up to 14 wins. We’re not ones to argue with that sort of maths.
The Lid Life Take
Road racing has a way of getting under your skin. You can walk away from it – but it doesn’t always walk away from you. For Glenn Irwin, the North West 200 clearly still has something to say.
His return isn’t reckless or romantic nonsense – it’s calculated, supported, and driven by a bigger picture. Proper team, proper bike, proper reasons.
We’ll be watching in May, same as everyone else – probably soaked to the bone, knackered, and smiling like idiots. Because when riders like Irwin line up on the grid, it reminds you exactly why these races matter.
Welcome back, Glenn. Stick around – we talk bikes, bravery, and biscuits.
