Inside the engine that keeps Moto2 honest

There’s a version of this story that goes: Triumph builds the engines, ships them to Moto2 teams, everyone goes racing. Neat. Simple. Also not quite right.

The real version involves a company called Externpro, a Technical Director called Trevor Morris, and a level of obsession over tolerances that makes your average track day prep look like a cursory tyre kick. The whole thing started to click on a lap of Jerez aboard the Triumph Street Triple 765 Moto2 Edition – a road bike with a direct, literal bloodline to the Grand Prix paddock a few hundred metres away.

“We don’t get engines from Triumph,” Trevor says, almost before you’ve finished asking the question. “We get a box of parts.”

That distinction matters. Externpro isn’t a service partner tacked onto the Moto2 supply chain. It’s the supply chain. Triumph provides the components and the DNA. Externpro builds every single race engine from scratch, checks each one, rebuilds it, and tests it before it goes anywhere near a circuit. “The only thing that we don’t do is the manufacturing,” Trevor explains. Everything else is theirs.

And when they say everything, they mean it. Crankcases are measured. Components are weighed. Tolerances are checked, then checked again. This isn’t distrust of Triumph’s manufacturing – it’s what a spec series demands. Moto2 exists to level the playing field, and that only works if the engines are genuinely identical. “One of the things that we have to target is that horsepower outputs are all the same,” Trevor says. “Within the limit… and the limit is only one per cent.”

Roughly one horsepower separates the strongest and weakest engine on the grid. Across a twenty-plus round season. That’s not just impressive – that’s the entire philosophical point of the championship.

Once built, each engine goes through a controlled dyno routine before it’s cleared. Two hours of running-in, then ten short power checks, then a cooldown, then the full power assessment. But they’re not just chasing peak numbers. “We have a dyno trace of the power and the torque that it has to follow,” Trevor explains. “So it’s not like one is losing two horsepower at the bottom, and the other one is gaining two horsepower at the top.”

Every engine has to match the complete power and torque curve — not just the headline figures, but the shape of the delivery from bottom to top. Same feel, same response, same behaviour in every corner of every circuit. For a class where the engine is meant to be the constant, that consistency is everything.

Race life for each unit is four weekends, roughly 1,000 miles, before it comes back to Externpro for a full strip. Every last nut and bolt. From there it goes through a structured rebuild cycle: a full refresh with a defined parts kit, then another deeper rebuild after the next four races, then a lighter refresh on its return. The aim is to keep performance inside that tight window for as long as possible.

Eventually, each engine hits what Externpro call its “end of life”, but that isn’t quite the end. There’s life after Moto2. “All those engines, at the end of their life in Moto2, we do another light refresh, and they are allocated for the FIM Junior and the Spanish championship,” Trevor says. Sealed, mileage-capped, strictly controlled. Once they hit around 1,800 miles in that role, though, that’s genuinely it. “They can use it as an ashtray or a paperweight,” he adds. He’s laughing, but he means it.

The engine allocation process has had its own evolution, too. At the original Street Triple Moto2 Edition launch, teams literally drew counters from a bag to pick their engines. Now? “We’ve actually got a computer program,” Trevor says, “so they choose it electronically.” Same principle – random, transparent, inarguable – just without the bingo hall energy.

It’s worth putting the 765 in context against what came before. The Honda CBR600RR powered Moto2 from 2010 to 2018 – a unit developed primarily for racing, honed through seasons of domestic and international supersport competition. The Triumph 765 is, in Trevor’s words, “built for a regular sporty naked runabout kind of bike. It’s not even an RR… it’s a normal, everyday road bike engine.”

The average road rider turning 7,400rpm on their Street Triple would be fairly surprised to learn that, in Moto2 trim, those same basic internals are spinning past 12,000rpm every lap. “Hats off to the engine, really,” Trevor says. “It is unbelievable.”

The Honda also had a known weakness in the valve department. “We were always having to reseat valves and re-cut them,” Trevor recalls. The 765 uses titanium valves with beryllium seats, which sidesteps that problem almost entirely. Riders used to be able to feel the old Honda getting tired by its fourth race weekend. The Triumph doesn’t do that. “The teams don’t feel it getting to the fourth race and getting tired like they used to.” In a championship built on consistency, that’s not a minor footnote.

There’s a bigger picture here too, one about where Moto2 fits in the ladder. The 765’s strong low and midrange torque character, very different from the Honda’s top-end focus, is actually closer to the feel of a modern MotoGP bike. Marco Bezzecchi said it himself when he stepped up in 2022: his Moto2 bike felt like a smaller Ducati MotoGP bike. “That was our target,” Trevor says. “We needed to close the gap.”

So the 765 triple isn’t just a road engine doing a convincing impression of a race unit. It’s become the link between the junior class and the premier class, not just in lap times, but in how riders learn to use a bike.

The engine’s job, ultimately, is to disappear. To be so consistent, so predictable, so identical across the entire grid, that it stops being a variable. What Externpro does – the weighing, the measuring, the dyno traces, the forensic rebuild cycles, is remove it from the conversation entirely, so that the riders, the chassis, and the teams are the ones that matter.

The fact that same engine started life in a road-going Street Triple makes it all the more extraordinary.
